Geebung Special School is a special school for students of primary and prior to school age (birth to 12) who have intellectual and other disabilities. It is located in Brisbane’s north-east in the Metropolitan Region of Education Queensland.

The school caters for about 148 school aged students and up to 40 students of pre-compulsory age. All students have been identified as requiring significant educational support arising from intellectual impairment and other disabilities.

The student catchment area is geographically very large, spreading from the inner city to Eaton’s Hill and Bracken Ridge. Therefore the school does not have a "local" community in the way that schools usually do.

The school team comprises teachers, teacher aides, a physiotherapist, a speech-language pathologist, an occupational therapist, and a nurse, to enable students with high educational and medical needs to receive an education within a school program with their peers. Specialists visiting the school include a guidance officer and advisory visiting teachers for hearing impairment and vision impairment.

Our school offers students the opportunity to learn in small class groups. Each student has an Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) that documents two to three individual goals negotiated by the staff in consultation with the parents. Individual learning goals are based on developing the student’s effective communication, social and personal independence skills.

Our Curriculum

At Geebung Special School we provide students with multiple opportunities to achieve and consolidate their learning through the learning areas of the Australian Curriculum and the Queensland essential learnings.

Our core curriculum areas for every student are:

  • Communication
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Science

All students are encouraged to become as independent as possible, working towards achieving our school motto 'I can do it myself'.
